This page describes the process of creating a portrait and the stages the work goes through. I work in acrylic on stretched canvas producing a result similar to oils but without the long drying time.
First I put on the background and block in the main areas of the portrait in colour, completely covering the canvas.
I then begin building up the underlayer of the various tones that are in the fur.
After completing the undertones I work through to the top layer to give the final coat colour. The undertones remain showing to give the shape and patterning of the coat.
With the body complete I begin working on the facial features and markings. Working in this way means that stray whiskers and hairs fom the face streak across the body and create a real feeling of depth.
The finished painting. This is given a couple of coats of varnish for extra protection and then it's ready.
